Empowering You with Skills For Success
- Learning in school or other extra curricular skills (sports, music, arts, or languages).
- Confident and compassionate communication with friends and family
- Emotional awareness and regulation for feeling calm and focused
In this 70-minute session I offer laser-focused teaching on specific targeted skills learning needed for students to establish a strong solid emotional and mental foundation for life. In these tutoring-like sessions I offer soulful empowerment of executive functions as explained below:
Let’s unpack the title above:
Soulful:
People are whole beautiful souls trying to do their best in a human body in the physical reality.
The teaching philosophy I use emphasizes focusing on strengths and providing supports for challenges without necessarily diagnosing weaknesses as pathologies.
Individuals who are interested in honing their executive functions may present their difficulties differently and may require to be taught in the particular way they learn. I am committed to customizing the teaching of any given executive function to meet the unique whole soulful personality that includes also their history, socio-cultural contexts, goals and intentions.
Empowerment:
The teachings are designed to demonstrate to students that it is within their reach to take the reins of their development in their own hands and experience their power to take charge and guide their actions, emotions, and intentions.
Emphasizing taking ownership of choices, difficulties, approaches, solutions, and methods leads students to also take ownership of their improved executive functions.
Knowing one’s capacity for change is empowering.
Executive Functions are:
- Inhibiting of impulses with self-awareness and self-respect
- Shifting with Flexibility from one situation to another, between activities or social groups and contexts
- Emotional Management through skillful recognition of present moment awareness of body and mind within a broader context
- Initiating calculated actions with bravery, passion, enthusiasm, and determination.
- Working memory for being able to be aware of as many facts as needed at a given moment to problem solve.
- Organization and Planning of short- and long-term activities, plans, or physical environment.
- Self Regulating of all that is needed to be involved in a given daily problem solving experience may it be an emotional minor or major crisis or cognitive task, or social complexity.
Executive functions for brave souls! In my work as a school psychologist with students with learning differences who were diagnosed with a variety of classifications, I noticed how brave each one of these students had to be. They were courageous to function in a school system that expected them to meet generic standards although they knew they were unable to meet these standards as noted in their diagnoses. I have also met many adults who, like the young students, are in a position of being brave in doing their best to meet standard expectations even though their strengths are in a different set of performances.
“If I have the belief that I can do it I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it in the beginning”
